After three nights on Phillip Island, we headed to a lovely airbnb at the South Coast (just outside of Merimbula) for six days. I just loved this location. Our place was up the hill from the beach, so we could see and hear the ocean, and on one side it was bordered by Bournda National Park. I have asked our local friends what their favourite beach destinations are in Australia. A few have said the Sunshine Coast, a few more have said they love going north of Newcastle, but the majority of people we have talked to have said they love the South Coast (between Melbourne and Sydney). I just don't know how you would choose your favourite Australian beach destinations. Every beach we have gone to has been gorgeous. I suppose it could depend on how you like to holiday. For example, do cities, big lights, and amusement parks tickle your fancy? Or do you prefer national parks and quiet nature with quaint little towns dappled throughout. At any rate, the South Coast did not disappoint. This was my absolute favourite part of our holiday, but I am one who is partial to nature. A few highlights here included:
- games, visits, and reading by the wood stove each night
- beautiful colourful birds
- breakfast on the deck each morning
- seeing so many whales from our deck
- listening to the ocean at night
- the gorgeous beaches
- whale watching tour
- celebrating Calla's birthday together
This deserted beach was just a short walk down the hill.

A walk along the boardwalk in Merimbula.
A huge highlight was our whale watching cruise. We had dolphin friends hang around the boat, and saw a bunch of whales who were migrating to Antarctica. A few mothers with calves, and a number of other pods. They are amazing creatures. We all took Gravol for our cruise, and I was happy we did, but little Jo just couldn't keep his eyes open as the Gravol, combined with the rocking boat, made him so sleepy. At least he was awake for the most exciting bits.
What a great day!
We decided to spend some time at a different beach and chose a warm day, but also a very windy day, creating less than ideal conditions. However, we persevered and found a tiny stretch of beach that was perfectly sheltered from the wind. We enjoyed our little oasis in the sunshine.
It's tradition that we make birthday cakes for our kids in whatever shapes they ask for each year. This year was a little different for Calla and Rylan, as we were travelling. So we improvised. This is my interpretation of sharks attacking our family on surfboards, and snakes attacking Grandma and Grandpa on the beach. A bit grim, but it was all I could come up with, and I knew Calla would get a kick out of it.
We celebrated Calla's birthday by finding our own little private beach. Unfortunately, it was full of blue bottle jellyfish, so we opted out of playing in the water for playing on the beach. What a glorious spot.
Goanna lizards!
Aren't they sweet?
And we picnicked at another lovely beach.
Here we are, on the road again! Some big themes of our trip - seven in a car, Anzac cookies, and finding the best red liquorice twists. Such great memories.
